Ahhh, Black Friday.
Some of you are already getting excited about the thought of waking up at 4 a.m., strapping on your shoppin’ shoes and mixing it up with other intrepid bargain hunters.
And some of you are thinking you would rather crawl naked over ground glass than leave the comfort of home to fight crowds the morning after the biggest meal you’ll eat all year.
Love it or loathe Black Friday, IT IS UPON US.
And whether you’re all-in or more all-on-the-couch, you’re definitely at least flirting with the idea of buying something. You’re at least considering taking advantage. We’re Americans! This is kind of our thing.
So the question becomes: how do I do this? How do I not blow it? How do I get the most bang for my precious, precious buck?
Despite the surprisingly high number of “experts” on the topic, it can be hard to figure out how to get Black Friday shopping right. Most people seem to agree that buying something just because it’s cheap is a bad idea. But beyond that, there are mixed opinions on what to buy.
For example, high end electronics. Maybe? Some shopping pros now recommend buying a new laptop ON Thanksgiving. What? Is Cyber Monday for losers?
And when should you buy gaming consoles? Toys? Winter clothes? Gear? The jury is decidedly out.
One area where you’ll find pretty consistent agreement is kitchen appliances. If you know someone who loves to bake, a stand mixer is a showstopper gift. Those things are always 30 trillion dollars. You will not regret this one.
So experts agree on small appliances. Literally everything else? Not so much.
What can you do? How can you win? How do you get a piece of this bargain pie (ew, sorry) without ending up with a bunch of useless crap?
What doesn’t get mentioned a lot when we talk about Black Friday shopping is what a “good deal” actually is. There is actually more to it than saving money. Stay with me!
Saving money is one kind of deal. What if we think of a good deal as something that’s good for you, good for the planet, and good for the people you share it with?
If it’s all about saving some money, go nuts. Buy all the stuff! But there’s also a way to make the money you do spend work for something a little bigger.
Avocado Mattress was born when a husband and wife began a quest for a healthy mattress. Back in 2016, they were looking for a green mattress — made from non-toxic, natural and organic materials — they could actually afford. But what was being marketed as green, all-natural or non-toxic was…not that.
So they took a DIY approach and did it themselves. Unlike other mattress and bed-in-a-box companies, Avocado mattresses are handcrafted in the USA without petroleum-based polyurethane foam, without toxic flame retardants, without dangerous pesticides, and without risk from volatile chemicals and gases.
Indoor air quality can be 5 times more polluted than outside air. Since most of us spend about 90% of our time indoors, it sounds fun to spend that time NOT inhaling chemicals and the ungodly cocktail of toxins that go into most mattresses.
You might feel some hesitancy about buying a mattress online. Traditional mattress retailers have convinced us that we can only decide if we want a bed by letting salespeople hover over us as we pretend sleep. Guess what? That doesn’t work. So Avocado offers a one-year sleep trial. And, it doesn’t hurt that right now they’re having a huge Black Friday sale.
Plus while you’re searching for deals, it’s nice to find something that benefits the planet.
It’s increasingly harder to trust that your money is doing anything more than lining the pockets of CEOs. Avocado is disrupting that as well. As members of 1% for the Planet, 1% of all revenues are donated to environmental nonprofits. In 2018, Avocado contributed to twelve different national and international nonprofits, even helping to fund an entire women’s center in Rwanda with Kula Project.
Listen, whether you hit Black Friday hard or sit it out, it marks the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year. For a lot of us, it also happens to be the most stressful time of the year. And you know what helps with stress? SLEEP. Lots of it. In a healthy sleep environment. Even better if that restful sleep comes from knowing that your “deal” included something for planet earth.
Avocado Mattress makes green mattresses with natural and organic materials. If that weren’t awesome enough, they’re also affordable! Find a healthy mattress for your family at AvocadoGreenMattress.com.
