Chances are if you ask two women how they feel about pregnancy you will get answers that are polar opposites. Be it snowflakes, stripes on a zebra or fingerprints, it’s a known fact that no two of these things are alike. Whether this is your first or fifth pregnancy you are no doubt going to feel differently along the journey, and you simply can’t compare one to another.
I had a like-hate approach toward my pregnancy, my mother loved each and every second of hers and some friends have outright despised it — but we all endure it for the love of the end result!
My theory was supported by a discussion in BabyCenter Community’s October 2016 Birth Club that centered on the drastically different feelings women have toward their pregnancies. One member, SRKoct8, brilliantly summarized it as such:
“I understand that we are not handicapped, but we have our physical limits! Some women handle the quick changes and symptoms better than others. Some women experience zero symptoms, while others get slammed.”
Olsonb77 is one such mom:
“This is my third pregnancy and my first two were a piece of cake,” she wrote. “I can remember thinking people were just wimpy when they were always complaining. Well, now I get it!
It’s not just our pregnancies that are unique. I think we each have a different pregnancy persona as well. While this list is in no way all-inclusive, these are the some of the most frequently discussed. Which one is yours?
The Warrior. You may be struggling from time to time, but you will not let your physical abilities be defined by your pregnancy. “Don’t tell me I can’t mow the lawn while pregnant.”
The Decathlete. Pregnancy does not affect your ability to do ten things at once, in fact you are surging with even more energy than usual. You painted the nursery, you still go for a jog everyday and you have even considering re-grouting your bathroom tile.
The Not Broken, Just Bent. You’ve faced some struggles and are dealing with a few physical limitations, but you know it’s related to pregnancy and only temporary. CrossFit can wait.
The Seasoned Pro. You’ve done this before, you know what to expect and nothing phases you. If there were an pregnancy Olympics you’d be the returning favorite.
The Bubble Wrapper. Pregnancy has not been easy on you. You may have had complications or even be on bed rest. Your concern is keeping your baby healthy and safe, to the point that you are practically willing to cover your bump in bubble wrap as an added precaution.
The Multiple Personality. This is definitely my pregnancy persona, a little bit of everything. One day you are a warrior, the next you are looking for some bubble wrap. I’m mostly on the hunt for the bubble wrap, but I do have a few moments of greatness.
