Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding star in the upcoming rom-com Last Christmas, and Twitter is obsessed with cracking the movie’s “big twist”

The trailer for Last Christmas dropped last night and it looks like a damn delight. The Paul Feig-directed holiday-themed romantic comedy stars Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke as a messy, downtrodden millennial who works at a year-round Christmas shop that she hates when she meets a seemingly perfect dude, played by Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding. They meet-cute, bond, he inspires her to follow her dreams (singing), and it’s revealed that Clarke once struggled with some kind of illness. That’s all we know from the trailer, and yet, Twitter has taken it upon themselves to guess at what the movie’s big “twist” might be.

Last Christmas might not have a big twist at all, but there’s something about the trailer, with its Christmas wonder and Clarke’s mysterious illness, that just makes you feel like there’s going to be some kind of supernatural or cosmic twist, and the internet is obsessed with figuring it out.

In the trailer, Golding’s character seemingly appears out of nowhere and is painfully perfect. This gave way to the premiere internet theory that his character is actually a ghost, or dead, and was sent down to Earth to change the protagonist’s life.

More specifically, she’s dead and he’s her “guardian angel.”

Or Clarke thinks he’s a ghost, but he’s just a really good dude.

Another big theory is that Golding’s character isn’t just dead, he’s dead and he gave Clarke’s character a heart transplant, citing the song that plays in the trailer, “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart…”

Another interesting theory — though a bit of a stretch — is that Clarke got a heart transplant from Golding’s deceased wife.

This tweet also includes a bonus theory, which is that Clarke’s character already fell in love in Golding’s character but she forgot him when she came out of a coma, but let’s be real — coma plots are a little passé.

Some other “twist theories” are low-key depressing, like the one that Clarke has a brain tumor, is dying, and presumably hallucinated Golding’s character?

Or the one that they are both in comas, both dreaming of one another, but Clarke survives when Golding dies and gives her his heart.

But of course, there might not be any twist and it’s just a sweet movie about two individuals falling in love in December, which would be perfect on its own.

Or maybe it’s just a Tarantino flick in disguise. Which, why?

The great Emma Thompson plays Clarke’s mom in the film and also wrote the script, and she’s a damn queen so whatever plot she delivers will surely be delightful. Last Christmas arrives in theaters on November 8, 2019.
