Please don’t dress as a sexy Mister Rogers this Halloween, PLEASE
The costume company behind last year’s hit-and-miss “Sexy Handmaid” costume, Yandy, is back at it again. Though it must be said, they’re experts at tossing “sexy” behind just about any popular culture concept and running to hell with it. Take this year’s “literally no one asked for this” design — behold, the “sexy” Mister Rogers costume.
If you’re saying to yourself, “surely this is just some play on a school girl costume, and not a way to profit off Saint Fred Rogers this Halloween season,” well, you would be wrong. Aside from the clear copycat version of Mister Rogers’ classic cardigan-and-slacks daily uniform, the name alone is enough to at least slightly ruin your childhood: it’s being sold as the “Nicest Neighbor” costume.
While we can’t be totally certain ol’ Fred did not don frilly Bobbysocks with his sensible Keds, it’s probably safe to assume that lewk is just for this particular costume.
The official description on Yandy’s website is absolutely worth a read: “Won’t you be my neighbor? Entice your friends next door with your playful puppets! Suit up with a necktie, and be the friendliest next-door neighbor in town in this exclusive Nicest Neighbor costume featuring a red top with a V-neckline, long fitted sleeves, a white detachable collar with a black necktie, and matching high waisted gray shorts with belt loops. (Hand puppets, wig, belt, and socks not included.)”
Naturally, the good, Fred-loving folks of the internet couldn’t let this costume go by without commentary — most of which are pure gold. You’re welcome.

This is not right. Shame to them for sexualizing something that was anything but.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

The “Nicest Neighbor” costume is still available on the company’s website for just under $60. The same couldn’t be said for last year’s doomed Handmaid costume (sorry, “Brave Red Maiden”), which was pulled from the site after swift public backlash. And, judging by the looks of it, it’s not hard to see why that particular costume wasn’t a hit.
After getting brutally roasted for the “Brave Red Maiden” costume online for an entire day, the company issued a statement saying it “became obvious the costume is being seen as a symbol of women’s oppression, rather than an expression of women’s empowerment.”
Though the Fred Rogers costume is, arguably, less offensive than the Fuckable Offred costume, it’s still a little hard to digest. Especially when you factor in the model wearing an exact replica of Mister Rogers’ hair, which is enough to give us all nightmares for the rest of eternity. This costume can jump straight into the sea.
That’s a whole lot of NOPE right there. Excuse me while I make an emergency therapy appointment for my inner child.
