John Legend calls out those who shame Chrissy for their parenting choices — but not him
Mommy shaming is a real problem that affects all moms, but celebrity mom-shaming tends to grab headlines more often as the moms in question are well, famous. Celebrity mothers constantly speak out about the judgment and the shame they receive every day from anonymous internet trolls and commenters, however, we rarely hear celebrity dads speaking up in defense of their wives, except for John Legend.
Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen is constantly being mommy shamed. That poor woman can’t walk outside without some troll shouting into the comment section, “Where are your kids?” The most egregious mommy shaming that Teigen ever faced was when she *gasp* went out on a date with Legend in 2016 a few weeks after Luna was born.

Despite the fact that both parents were away from their daughter for the evening, only Teigen faced insults and passive aggressive comments like, “Who wants to leave a one-week-old baby to go to a bar?” and “I would never leave my baby after a week! Some folks just don’t get it.”
In a new interview with Romper, Legend said that 2016 incident was the first time he saw the impossible expectations put on mothers, but not fathers.
“People were shaming Chrissy for leaving the house, and didn’t say anything bad to me,” Legend told the publication. “Look, we’re both parents and we’re both going out. If you think that’s not appropriate — and first of all, you shouldn’t think that’s not appropriate — if you’re going to blame somebody, blame both of us, not just the mother.”
Like we mentioned above, Teigen is constantly being mommy shamed by internet strangers. One time they shamed her for posting a breastfeeding photo to Instagram. Another time for the way she dressed her daughter, and even once for taking Luna on a slide. Yes, a slide.
Last year when Legend hosted the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, Teigen trolled the trolls and jokingly “slammed” her husband online for having the audacity to go back to work with an infant at home.
“Wow didn’t u just have a baby John smh go take care of it !!!!!! disgusting,” Teigen tweeted.

Currently, Legend is working with Pampers to install more diaper-changing stations in men’s bathrooms across the country, because after seeing the way his wife is ridiculed and shamed and exclusively referred to as the de facto parent, it has become Legend’s cross to bear that both parents equally share parenting duties and if that means they share the brunt of the parent-shaming, so be it.
“There are all these gender norms that are baked into how people are having these conversations and the critiques people are leveling at her and not at me,” he added to Romper. “I just wish people would think more about that and what that means.”
If the internet trolls cannot be stopped, can they at least sling their passive aggressive comments at both parents, instead of just the moms? But really, let’s cool it with the parent shaming in general. Cool? Cool.
