It seems like out of nowhere, air fryers started gaining massive popularity leading into the 2019 year. And it’s no wonder why. Americans adore (like can’t get enough of) fried food, and plenty of us own fryers at home to whip up dinner, munchies, and more on the daily. In fact, a fryer is a regular countertop appliance in so many homes nationwide, especially in middle America and the south. We’re down for it, because fried food is the bees knees.
However, as a country, we’ve started to face the reality that cooking our foods to golden-brown perfection on a daily basis can clog our arteries, make us gain weight faster, and can put us at risk for a plethora of related diseases, including cancer. Ick. Fried food is also a major contributor to childhood obesity, and that’s just not cool.
Enter: Air Fryers. (Cue the sound of angels singing.) These easy-to-use kitchen appliances are taking the country by storm, and there are quite a few new versions on the market for you to try at home. Of course you can fry your favorite foods without all of that oil and still make it taste freaking bomb. At least now you can, thanks to the best air fryers of 2019.
How do air fryers work?
Air fryers work just like regular ol’ deep fryers, but instead of dipping those julienned potato strips into a pool of hot oil, you can simply toss them in the air fryer and wait for the magic to happen. Just don’t forget to season first! A major benefit of air frying is the ability to season mid-fry. (My foodie heart is pounding and not from too much fried food, TG.) Aside from the seasoning perks, if you have kids and small hands adventuring around the kitchen, consider an air fryer a safety investment, too. Since it works without hot oil, you don’t have to worry about oil burns anymore. (Yep, it can even happen to the most “coordinated” adults.)
What can you make with an air fryer?
Dream big, because you can whip up anything from veggies and chicken to fries and dessert. We’re talking air fryer brownies, crispy air fryer French fries, and heck, you can even make air fryer hard-boiled eggs. Can you air fry your salad too? Apparently, yes, according to Williams-Sonoma.

BLACK AND DECKER AIR FRYER REVIEWS:
“Better than restaurant quality pomme frites! No-guilt treats: Easy to operate and super easy to clean. Have been using for a few weeks now, keep finding new things to try (no battered items though)…but cooks evenly and fast.” -looking4stuff, Amazon
“We are eating french fries again, and the big difference is that they are now healthy. I will let it warm up for maybe 2 minutes, throw the cut potatoes in for 20 minutes on high, shake them up once half way through and we consistently end up with perfect french fries. You can spice them up however you like (garlic powder, salt, spice), or not at all. I’ve made potato chips, also.” -Karen Richardson, Amazon
RECOMMENDED BY NEW YORK MAGAZINE AS A TOP AIR FRYER
COSORI AIR FRYER REVIEWS:
“I’ve had this about a week. I’ve made cake, sweet potato fries, wings and chicken thighs. I love how amazingly crisp and juicy everything is! The presets are extremely accurate and is a great size for 4 good size thighs or 12 wings.” -Maggie S., Amazon
“I just received my Cosori air fryer and i’m so excited. It is so large, so much cooking space. Came with excellent instruction book and a wonderful cookbook. Oh my word love this air fryer. Love the safety feature from the basket falling out because of hitting release by mistake. I do find it cooks much faster then my old one but that’s great! I researched a lot of them before buying this one. Absolutely… no regrets!” -Susan, Amazon.com
RECOMMENDED BY BESTPRODUCTS AS BEST COMPACT AIR FRYER
DASH COMPACT AIR FRYER REVIEWS:
“This little gadget is awesome! I purchased it for my office at work, as I used to cook my sweet potato fries in a convection oven where I would have to go into the break room multiple times to flip my fries and reset the timer for additional cooking. This air fryer has made my life so much simpler and has eliminated all of that! My frozen sweet potato fries now only take 15 min to cook, I can keep the fryer in my office, and after about 5 uses, I can say it cooks very well and gives my fries (and tots) a delicious crisp fried taste.
I have already encouraged several of my co-workers to purchase one, and I’ll probably buy a larger one for my house down the road. This size is ideal for one or two servings, so if you are feeding more people, I would recommend a larger air fryer. Clean-up also couldn’t be easier! It’s adorable and a simple tool, I am very happy with my purchase!” -Michelle My Bell, Amazon
ELITE PLATINUM AIR FRYER REVIEWS:
“This is our second air fryer and we love it! The first one, a Holsem, only lasted a week or less (three uses) and the heat quit. I returned it to Amazon and bought this one. So far, we like the Elite much better than the other brand. This one is far easier to pick up the basket as it just lifts out! That’s it. No locks, no little plastic slide thingys to break, you just literally open the top and lift the basket up. It’s also larger and the pan that sits underneath the basket is easier to lift out and clean. I was afraid that, since the lid lifts up to look at your food or lift the basket out, it would be “tippy” but it isn’t at all!
There are little suction cups on the bottom of the air fryer that stick to the counter just from the weight of the fryer itself. They work great and, frankly, I doubt the lid would make the thing tip even if the suction cups weren’t there. It seems very sturdy and it took me very little time to get used to lifting the lid and then pulling the catch up to close it. I’ve had zero trouble with it and highly recommend it. It’s also super easy to clean. I just wipe it out for fries and onion rings because nothing sticks. This fryer is also easier to see the digital readout than the Holsem was. I’m 5’6″ and I had to get really close and almost stand on my tiptoes to read the Holsem as our counters are a tad higher than some. This Elite has the digital readout on the top front which is a lot better. We love it!” -Wickiup, Amazon
NINJA AIR FRYER REVIEWS:
“Been studying air fryers for about two years. Decision was about counters-pace vs basket size. The ninja takes up slightly less space than the stand mixer. It’s lightweight and easy to pull out from under the cabinet to use (to allow for air flow). I like it so much, I wish for a bigger one just to do my entire meal in it at once. For two people, it does a fair amount of wings or tater tots, or the sweet potato fries pictured here. I used the reheat function and the bang bang shrimp came out quite tasty.
Steaks came out moist and medium rare, but not seared even on the crisper plate. It has worked well with salmon and chicken breasts. So much easier to clean than a pan and my stove top. It cooked those breaded chicken rounds, fish, and tater tots and in about 10 minutes. Much less time than a toaster oven. The Ninja does not come with added attachments for the grilling or baking as the Phillips, but it’s $200 less. Nuff said.” Xena_Mom, Amazon
